Destroyer

Destroyers were front-line warships combining high endurance and large weaponry with high speed. Being something between Cruiser and Frigate they were one of most characteristic ships of fleets, and serious threat to most of enemy units.

During Homeworld Era most common Skaal Tel-class as well as Revelation-class ships were armed with Ion Cannons and two turrets with kinetic weapons. This combined weaponry allowed Destroyers to pay much more universal role then frigates did. Ion weapons were used primary on attacks against slow moving, large targets, when kinetic weaponry could strike on smaller targets, such as Corvettes.

Cataclysm Era brought Deacon-class units. They despite of being heavy transporters in first plans, become something completely new between destroyers. Classic design of kinetic weapons plus beam weapons was modified by adding Missile Launchers mount on turret. That new addition made destroyer able to play additional role of anti-strike craft vessel. Missiles could hit enemy 360 degree around the ship making destroyer probably best ship for escort in that time.

Homeworld 2 Era brought new, larger and more powerful units. Hiigaran Destroyer was universal unit with high survivability, relatively high speed, and large array of weapons, featuring four Heavy Kinetic Gun Turrets which gave serious punch to both strike crafts and capital ships. Vaygr response to that unit was armed with powerful Fusion Missile Launcher making it ideal ship for attack on heavily armoured ships.
