Energy Cannon technology was derived from a rapid fire form of the Plasma Bomb Launcher. Small and durable enough to survive high G-force during launch, a sphere of high energy plasma could be created by the small cannons in less then a second. Despite of having lower fire rate then Mass Drivers they were capable to deliver much more damage then their predecessor.
Kiith Somtaaw adopted this technology from Imperialist frigate captured in Koreth's Rift Sector. Since then all Somtaaw ships were upgraded to use of Energy CannonsSSource: Homeworld: Cataclysm

Energy Cannons were proven to be great weapon for both fighters and capital ships, however because of unknown reason Hiigaran navy didn't use this technology during Vaygr War.
