The SJCC-14 Sakala-class Command Carrier is a massive land vehicle designed by Kiith S'jet and built by the Coalition of the Northern Kiithid and utilized during Operation Khadiim. Despite a number of them being destroyed, they eventually played a vital role in discovering the secrets of Khar-Toba and inflicting devastating losses against the Gaalsien.

Lore[]

"The Sakala class of command/exploration carriers are the cutting edge of Nabaal and S'jet modular technology. The Sobaan sponsored Sakala was the first carrier of this design to clear the construction yards in late 1105 with Kapisi following two triads later. While the Kapisi is being fitted for Operation Khadii, the Sakala has served in combat operations nearly non-stop since her inaugural shakedown patrol and has already earned distinction in two major offensives against Gaaslien raiding formations. There are plans for eight other command carriers in this class with Nabaal and Hraal claiming construction priority for the next two." — Expedition Guide

Equipped with production facilities for support vehicles, as well as a control center for flight operations. Based on the previous Ifriit-class heavy carrier, primary improvements were made toward the carrier's ability to conduct deep desert exploration by improving its powerplants, propulsion, support systems and combat proficiency. Five carriers were built by 1110 KDS, christened Sakala, Kapisi, Fiiskire, Akalon and Amida.

The first of her class, the Kiith Siidim and Kiith Soban-sponsored Sakala, left the Hraal industrial works shipyards at Tiir on late 1105 KDS, which made the Carrier class named Sakala-class. The construction of Kiith S'jet-sponsored Kapisi was started earlier that year and completed on 1106 KDS, six months after the Sakala.

All five carriers were allocated for operation Khadiim and preparations were underway to launch them when forces of Kiith Gaalsien attacked. During the initial offensive it is reported that Fiiskire and Akalon were destroyed. Amida is presumably lost shortly thereafter. Only Sakala and Kapisi survived the first attacks, with Kapisi escaping from Epsilon base and Sakala from Charlie base.

Towards the end of the expedition, the Siidim betrayed the coalition, destroying and disabling a S'jet Lander before escaping. In the subsequent battle at Torin crater, Sakala was destroyed in a battle against the Kapisi, with all hands lost.

Eventually Kapisi reaches the Khar-Toba, also known as The First City. After an intense battle, they defeat the Gaalsien's religious leader, K'had Sajuuk and begin exploring the wreck site.

Six more Carriers were planned, but after the end of the Desert Wars, it isn't confirmed if they were built, though the conflict proved their great capabilities.

Multiplayer[]

Coalition carriers form the core of the fleet. They construct vehicles, conduct repairs, provide fleet supply and are surprising lethal in firefights. Like most coalition units, the Sakala-class is slower and less maneuverable compared to its Gaalsien counterpart but is more durable due to its tough armor and solid chassis. This gives it an advantage in a prolonged firefight, and increase the survivability of nearby friendly vehicles operational for longer due to its repair facilities.

In contrast to Gaalsien carriers, coalition carriers feature a completely centralized construction system. This means the carrier builds all the units that are accessible, from light attack vehicles to battlecruisers, where as Gaalsien carriers can only build cruisers and aircraft. They rely on their production cruisers to build light and heavy units at separate locations. Coalition carriers can build up to three units at a time, starting with a single assembly line, and two additional ones that can be researched. Coalition carriers can act as resource drop offs, but this duty should eventually be assigned to a support cruiser, so the coalition carrier can move into a forward position that is easier to defend, or easier to threaten enemy production and resource operations.

Power Shunting[]

A unique capability of the carrier is its power shunting ability. Power can be diverted to different systems to make them more efficient and powerful. The Sakala-class has four systems that affect its firepower, weapons range, armor durability, and ally repair systems. At full power, coalition carriers can inflict heavy damage at extended ranges against any ground target with its missiles. Fully powered repair systems can rapidly repair friendly vehicles, and fully powered armor system greatly reduces damage taken, even from railguns. Shunting power takes several seconds, so it is advised to read the situation and distribute power accordingly. A temperature gauge indicates if a carrier is overheating, when too much power is shunted to across its system, the carrier will begin to overheat and take damage. Carrier Damage from overheating can be overcome by shunting full power into armor and activating self repair.

Strike Craft Compliment[]

As a carrier, it can house up to fifteen strike fighters and three Tactical Bombers and two Gunships. The tactical bombers and gunships share the same launch runway and landing pad, while the strike fighters are launched on three separate runways.

Cruise Missiles[]

The Sakala-class can launch long-range, low-altitude, guided cruise missiles, delivering a devastating payload to a targeted area with an unlimited range. The missile takes time to reach its target, with longer time taken at greater ranges. It impacts with shattering force, obscuring what few units it does not destroy in a cloud of smoke and dust. The cruise missile deals 5000 damage at ground zero and gains an additional 50% damage if it fires from an elevation above its target. Cruise missiles are best suited for destroying slow, but large formations of vehicles and should be used conservatively due to its long reload. Examples are large groups of railguns or slow moving cruisers. Targeting resource nodes can be effective, although there can be little warning time, wary opponents may evacuate their salvagers from the blast zone in time.

Strong against:[]

The coalition carrier is generally weak to all units unless it has a large power reserve. The more power reserves it is supplied with, the more potent it is against any kind of unit, even railguns or cruisers, so long as it's not fighting against a large number of them. Factoring in the cruise missile, the coalition carrier is rather effective against any unit. Overall, the coalition carrier is a general purpose combat unit when it has large power reserves.

Armor Systems[]

When under massive attack from enemy railguns or cruisers, quickly shunting power to armor can greatly increase the carrier's survivability. Shunting power into the carrier before it suffers too much damage will greatly increase its chances to outrun and escape pursuing enemies.

Keeping repair systems at level 1 is generally recommended, as it ensures the carrier can repair nearby friendly vehicles at the cost of one power. The carrier an repair two units simultaneously, one on each flank.

Trivia[]

  • In the Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak Expedition Guide, Section 6 refers it as a Sakala-class Deep Desert Carrier while Section 7 refers it as Sakala-class Command/Exploration Carrier.[1]
  • According to the journal entries of Rachel S'jet, she believes that Kiith Siidim rushed the completion of the Sakala in order to secure the class name away from Kiith S'jet's Kapisi.[1]
  • By the time the Kapisi was launched, the Sakala has already had a number of combat operations under its belt, which helped significantly in defending Project Stormbreaker[1]
  • Despite featuring AA weapons, they are never seen in action.
  • Coalition carrier's missiles are visible through fog of war.
  • Its total crew complement rests at 1850.
