The Progenitor Dreadnaughts were large Super Capital Ships built by Progenitors thousands of years before the Hiigarans found one of them in the Karos Graveyard as the Gatekeepers of Sajuuk. The Dreadnaught was guarded by a Progenitor Keeper, a powerful destroyer. The ship itself was kept in the berth section of the Progenitor Mothership which contained a special dock for the Dreadnaught and a Keeper Destroyer. The primary weapon of the Dreadnaught was a Phased Cannon Array capable of destroying frigates or heavily damaging destroyers and cruisers in one shot. The Dreadnaught was also armed with several anti-fighter Kinetic Guns and a plasma cannon turret effective against light capital ships or frigates. There were two known Dreadnaughts. The second one was found by the Hiigarans in the Karos Graveyard, while the first was found by the Vaygr at an unknown location. Both were capable of opening Balcora Gate, the only way to reach Sajuuk, and thus they were known as Gatekeepers of Sajuuk.

After its discovery in the Karos Graveyard, the Hiigaran Dreadnought was used to great effect in several battles. At the Vaygr Assembly Point it was able to destroy an enemy battlecruiser with its main cannon but was heavily damaged in the process (seeing the reduced power of the cannon later, it was possibly overcharged). The Shipyard Nabaal was used to repair the Dreadnaught although the cannon remained inoperable. Later the Bentusi Harbor Ship Bentus would repair the Great Cannon.
The Dreadnaught participated in the Hiigarans' many battles against the Vaygr until the fleet reached Balcora Gate where it was used to open the gate and clear the path to Sajuuk.
Makaan's Dreadnaught was also used to open the Balcora Gate, and later was used in battle against the Hiigarans at Balcora. There it was either destroyed or captured by the Hiigaran fleet.

- Although various sources state that the Dreadnaught has ten Kinetic Turrets, in-game only six are visible, and only these six appear to fire.
- Despite popular belief, the Progenitor Dreadnaughts were built as The Gatekeepers of Sajuuk. Their purpose was to open The Balcora Gate, not to be line warships. However, for both Hiigarans and Vaygr they were such powerful units that they were classed as Dreadnaughts.
- Although most people destroy Makaan's Dreadnaught, it can be captured. However, it is extremely difficult, given that it is accompanied by about ten Battlecruisers and that the Phased Cannon Array can destroy a Marine Frigate in one shot.
